South Asian Vegan & Gluten-Free Recipes That Don’t Sacrifice Flavor

Food must be accessible to all, says Deccan Delights. And that includes individuals with dietary restrictions. If you happen to be vegan gluten-free, or both, you shouldn’t need to compromise on flavor. South Asian cuisine is naturally spicy, vegetable-rich, and creative. With the right recipes, you can have an entire gamut of flavor without compromise.

Here are a few of our favorite South Asian vegan and gluten-free recipes that are full of flavor and soul.

Masoor Dal

Masoor dal is a ready-in-no-time red lentil dish with deep flavor. We slow cook it with turmeric, cumin, mustard seeds, and fresh ginger. The texture is hearty. The flavor is deep. Serve over steamed rice or gluten-free roti for a warm, nourishing meal.

Baingan Bharta

Smoky. Soft. Spicy. Baingan bharta is made of roasted eggplant, mashed and sautéed in garlic, onions, and tomatoes. It is gluten-free and vegan by default. The smoky flavor makes it rich and does not need cream or butter for it to turn phenomenal.

Chana Masala

One of the North Indian classics, chana masala, is chickpeas in a rich, spiced gravy. We make a house blend of garam masala, fresh coriander, and sour tomatoes. It serves well with basmati rice. It is comforting, filling, and totally vegan.

Vegetable Pulao

Aromatic rice with seasonal vegetables always wins. Basmati rice cooked with cinnamon, cloves, green peas, and carrots is what we use to prepare our vegetable pulao. We also include a pinch of saffron for color and aroma. No gluten. No milk. Full flavor.

Tandoori Cauliflower

Cauliflower florets are marinated in coconut yogurt, turmeric, and smoked paprika. We roast them until they are golden and crispy. It is smoky, spicy, and perfect to serve as a starter or main course. A healthier version of an old-style tandoori plate.

Coconut Chickpea Curry

Creamy and rich without any cream. Coconut milk, chickpeas, and baby spinach constitute this dish. Ginger, garlic, and curry leaves seasoned it. Smooth and healthy as silk. It is also one of our strongest vegan dishes at Deccan Delights.

Sabudana Khichdi

Made with tapioca pearls, sabudana khichdi is refreshing yet filling. We make it with roasted peanuts, curry leaves, and green chilies. A squeeze of lemon adds a refreshing touch. It is gluten-free and traditionally consumed during fasts.

Mixed Veg Curry

This colorful curry contains potatoes, green beans, carrots, and peas. We cook the lot in a cumin and coriander-flavored tomato sauce. It is easy and colorful. Serve best with rice or gluten-free millet rotis.

Vegan Korma

Korma, normally, uses cream or yogurt, but our vegan version gets its richness from cashew paste. We combine it with ground spices and fresh vegetables. The final result is a kingly dish devoid of any dairy. It is rich yet clean.

Sweet Potato Halwa

End your meal on a sweet note with this guilt-free halwa. We utilize mashed sweet potatoes, almond flour, coconut sugar, and cardamom. It is comforting, warm, and completely dairy-free. A dessert that is clean as well as comforting.
